DENR for Houses: Using bleaching solution to counter COVID-19

Last updated on May 13th, 2021 at 05:50 am

On Thursday the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) urged the public to disinfect their households with the correct proportion of bleaching agents as a precautionary measure to combat COVID-19 spread.

Environment chief Roy Cimatu said in a statement that a combination of 10 to 15 per cent of bleaching agents or hypochlorite sodium and clean water should be used to sanitize domestic establishments.

Cimatu added that this solution is also “sufficient to decontaminate the environment,” as it could also be sprayed on household waste before it is taken out of the house for proper disposal.

As of Thursday, there were 217 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, 17 of which died while 8 managed to recover.

Cimatu then instructed garbage collectors, before being shipped to landfill sites, to use the same approach on collected waste.

Garbage trucks, he said, should also be disinfected before the next batch of waste is collected.

The aim is to destroy the virus present in the solid waste and the trucks transporting it.

Meanwhile, Cimatu said DENR’s Solid Waste Management Office and Local Government Units Issues should cooperate with the mayors on proper disposal of the masks, gloves, caps, and hospital gowns used by medical frontliners.
