A powerful earthquake hit the Philippines today (Monday, March 2, 2026), causing tremors to affect areas of the archipelago eliciting numerous reports by the locals and the monitoring authorities. This paper is a compendium of the most confirmed facts about the magnitude, epicenter, impact, and official accounts of the quake as it is presently available.
The quake was of Magnitude 4.9 according to international seismic networks and the eyewitness testimonies and felt in a number of provincialities of the Western Visayas area of the Philippines. Seismic evidence shows that it happened in Iloilo Province, in Western Visayas, near San Antonio, on Monday morning (local time).
Along with the 4.9-magnitude tremor, there were local reports and 5.1-magnitude shaking detection in the surrounding areas, e.g. San Remigio, in the Province of Antique indicating a seismic event is occurring in the area of several different locations.
The official seismic bulletin issues of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology are awaiting or pending to be published in PHIVOLCS.
The first crowd-sourced seismic data locates a rough epicenter of the present day quake at the Western Visayas area off the provinces of Iloilo and Antique. Depth and specific coordinates are yet to be issued by the official authorities at PHIVOLCS when they were reporting them.
Such great seismic activities within the Visayas are not foreign considering that the Philippines are located in the Pacific Ring of Fire where the tectonic plates collide and result in frequent earthquakes.
The quake was felt globally albeit in a moderate magnitude since it was located near population centres. Individuals in Iloilo City and nearby towns had reported shaking buildings and ground movements.
According to the government authorities, there is still no official announcement of victims or significant damage. The agencies that are evaluating the situation are emergency service providers and disaster management agencies.
There are local response teams that are alert to check the aftershocks and give information on the safety of the people. The locals are encouraged to adhere to the emergency response in the area and to keep on track of the news via official platforms.
Primary sources provide that the quake was registered with Magnitude of about 4.9 along the Western Visayas with other minor tremors being felt along the region.
This was estimated to have been the epicenter without the provincial boundaries Western Visayas, Iloilo Province, Philippines.
So far, there was an absence of tsunami notification or alert of this occurrence.
