Early morning tremors from an earthquake have caused worry at the top diving spots in Southeast Asia. A massive magnitude 7.9 earthquake hit off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines, on 8 June 2026 with localised tsunami warnings. The people and visitors of the east coast of Malaysia, the state of Sabah, got up to hear the alarming sound of emergency sirens.

If you had plans to travel to a dream tropical destination, the question you may have is, will it be safe to continue on? The latest status report on the tsunami over the weekend and the implications for travelling to Semporna for diving, as well as the current status of the world-famous diving conditions in Sipadan.

The Mindanao Earthquake and Its Impact on Sabah

The magnitude 7.9 quake hit at 7:37 AM at a depth of 50 km, with its epicentre located south of Koronadal City. The tectonic change took place under sea level, so it caused a rapid reaction from the monitoring authorities in the region.

Timeline of Events (June 8, 2026):

  • 07:37 AM ── Magnitude 7.9 Earthquake strikes off Mindanao, Philippines.
  • 08:36 AM ── MetMalaysia issues an official Tsunami Advisory for East Sabah.
  • 10:30 AM ── Precautionary warning sirens activated in coastal districts.

After the initial shockwave, the Malaysian Meteorological Department today issued a “cautious” advisory on the possibility of a tsunami in the districts of Tawau, Kunak, Lahad Datu, and Semporna for Sabah. Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup directed the activation of early-warning sirens on the coastlines before the people were warned not to go to the beaches as a precaution.

Is it Safe? Current Travel Safety to Semporna and Sipadan

The local authorities have good news for those with tickets or resort bookings. As per the official notification, the tsunami advisory has been officially lifted at 12:00 PM on 8 June 2026. The threat of destructive waves was removed, based on real-time monitoring of ocean buoys and marine data. The largest difference in sea level measured was a minor 0.4 metres, and no damage or injuries occurred to structures or people along the coast.

Current Travel Safety to Semporna

Semporna is the main coastal port to the Celebes Sea islands. Local hotel guests were awakened for a few moments by the morning tremor, but other municipal functions, jetty services, and local marketplaces are fully resumed. Local police and emergency services are on normal alert, but there are no active travel bans or evacuation orders in place affecting entry to the district.

Sipadan Diving Conditions and Marine Stability

Sipadan Island is renowned for its plunging walls and abundant sea life. Fortunately, the topography of its underwater waters was not affected by the faraway seismic activity.

The marine operators reported that the diving conditions at Sipadan are still very good. No disruption of underlying reef structures, massive schools of barracuda or resident sea turtle populations. Conditions are still good and dive boats are in their daily routine from Mabul and Kapalai resorts.
