MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) has reached its target enrollment rate of 22.2 million students for the coming school year, a 20% decrease from the student population last year.

According to DepEd, as of yesterday, there are 22,233,806 students have registered in public and private schools, compared to the 27 million enrollees last year.

Education Undersecretary Jesus Mateo said that the department lowered the target this year due to the health crisis brought upon by Covid-19 pandemic.

Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said that parents are still enrolling their child since they have a better appreciation of new learning modes that the department is offering.

Meanwhile, About 1.35 million have so far enrolled in private schools, a measly 31.1% of the average 4M enrolees in the recent years.

Late enrollees will still be accomodated until September. Basic education policy states that the learning need to meet the 80% of the prescribed number of school days on every school year.

Student who will not be able to attend physically in the coming school year should take DepEd’s Alternative Learning System instead.

The classes in public schools  will commence on August 24. Learning modes includes online platforms, printed and digital modules, television and radio. Limited face-to-face classes next school year were also approved in areas with low risk of the virus transmission.
