When a massive lottery win comes, it usually seems like a life-altering miracle, and that is exactly what it turned out to be to one Japanese man, who ended up in the middle of an emotional battle. A 66 year old retired Japanese man lottery win, $3.8 million lottery to his surprise, he decided to conceal the fortune to his wife. Rather than leading an open celebration he started to lead a covert lifestyle that involved all the luxury travelling, cars, and upscale resorts. What seemed to be the freedom at first became quickly covered with guilt, loneliness, and anxiety. The fact that unexpected money may influence relationships and mental health as well as personal values stands out in this story to remind us that we cannot be sure that money will make us happy and at peace.
This man, known as S, had won 600 million yen (already approximately 3.8 million dollars), and this amount was so huge that this person was not immediately delighted, but he was afraid. As he mentioned, he knew that the probability of winning such a lottery was low as compared to getting hit by lightning, and therefore the win was surreal. Prior to this stroke of fortune he and his wife lived simply on a joint income of approximately 2,000. monthly, having saved not much more than 174,000 dollars after a life of labor.
In spite of this outrageous victory, S did not disclose the whole amount to his wife. Rather, he informed her that he had only won a small amount of 32,000 and he was going to spend it on renovations at home.
The couple lived a very minimal life over the years. His wife was frugal to the extreme- there was no beer in the house, no costly items were bought, no fancy car. S was afraid to tell the real winnings because he did not want to create conflict or suspicion and he decided to keep the matter secret. He had millions at his disposal, and he started spending it quietly on things that he had never experienced: on high-end resorts, on luxury cars, he was traveling a lot now.
Even though he liked his new wealth at first, the excitement soon wore out. He began experiencing a lot of guilt particularly when he imagined his own father dying on his own after bankruptcy and divorce. This isolation happened because S could not share his luxurious experiences with his wife. He became stressed by the fear of being discovered and the burden of secret. What seemed to be a dream had gradually become a liability.
S later on found himself unable to handle the emotional pressure on his own. He has also talked to a financial advisor who has told him to take care of his family rather than spending on hidden luxury. As advised, he had invested close to $3.2 million on insurance policies and had the children and his wife as beneficiaries. This move brought some relief to him and enabled him to rekindle with his values.
S directly acknowledged that money did not give him pride as he had not earned the money. Rather, it rekindled the past and caused emotional imbalance. His narrative immediately became viral in Japan, and numerous social media users talked about how money coming out of thin air can interfere with relationships and individual well-being.
Such a peculiar case demonstrates that money can introduce some emotional problems. Although the idea of luxury and comfort may be in the mind of many, the psychological effect of concealing such life altering news may be too much. The experience of the Japanese man shows the value of honesty, trust, and good financial planning even when it comes about as an unexpected development.
