Lee Yong-joo, known for his acting career in Princess Hours and tvN’s popular sitcom Blue Tower, has passed away at the age of 44. He died suddenly, with the actor’s death initially being posted on social media by a close friend on August 29.
With the role of a bumbling but hearty novice soldier in Blue Tower, Lee’s reputation grew almost overnight and found a faithful audience. However he never had served in the military and his skills as a recruit were one that became one of his most memorable television moments. He further made his acting debut for a series of films. Princess Hours, Rude Miss Young-ae, Hello, Francesca and Let’s Eat were among the movies.
The actor had been open about his heart issue before. Lee said in 2013 that he was spared military service in the early 1980s after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an abnormal thickening of the heart muscle. His mother, as well, suffered from it, he said. But there is no definite medical connection between the ailment and his passing.
The revelation of Lee Yong-joo’s untimely death has elicited much sympathy from old comrades and from fans. Portions of his memoirs appeared online from members of the Blue Tower cast, where he is fondly remembered for his sense of humor, ability to be kind and encouraging to others.
His funeral was on 31st August at Bundang Jesaeng Hospital Funeral Hall, where he will be buried at Seongnam City Funeral Culture Center. Lee Yong-joo was a beloved actor in the entertainment industry in Korea. He had a unique comedic style and memorable character roles. His death was a big loss.
