The dual relationship between Malaysia and the Myanmar junta and National Unity Government (NUG) establishes a vital shift in how ASEAN conduct diplomatic activities in the region. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has initiated peace dialogue mediation through his focus on humanitarian support since the catastrophic March 28 earthquake in Myanmar.
The Malaysian strategy rejects the five-point consensus adopted by ASEAN which proved to be both unyielding and ineffective because it places emphasis on human population relief. This method allows ASEAN to talk to both the junta and NUG which ASEAN does not officially recognize while avoiding political associations with any party.
