The Hung Kings Commemoration Festival has started at a scale never seen before, and one event was drawing the attention of the nationwide theintroduction of performances of Muong gong. This ancient musical tradition is being presented first ever in an official manner as part of the most sacred national celebration in Vietnam. Caught at the Hung Kings Temple, it is a family friendly yet spiritual experience that unites the local and the international visitors to the event to see history come alive.
This year’s festival is not only about the celebration of ancestors but also about re-established cultural identity. The addition of the Muong traditions is an expansion of a wider initiative to bring in focus the multicultural Vietnamese heritage to a national level.
The signing of the grand opening ceremony in Hung Vuong Square on April 17, 2026 evening is the main attraction of guests. This is a mass art show with a title of Sacred Origins The Ancestral Land of Hung Vuong which takes place in the presence of more than 500 performers.
Muong gong is featured in the show section called Returning to the Land of Heritage where traditional rhythms and shamanism as well as folk narratives blend with a bang of spectacle and sound effects. The performance is aimed at putting viewers into the spiritual origins of the Muong people and link them to the wider Vietnamese identity.
The festival this year is special since there has been a new administrative merger between the Phu Tho Province, the Vinh Phuc Province, and the Hoa Binh Province. The ethnic group known as the Muong who are mainly connected with Hoa Binh became the key in the formation of the cultural discourse of the region.
Changing the theme and incorporating the music of Muong gong to the festival, Vietnam is expressing a statement of unity among diversity. The rich, reverberating tones of the gongs represent communicating with the ancestors and therefore are significant in a festival that commemorates the Hung Kings.
One has to plan to go to the performance and appreciate the Muong gong show, and define your attendance especially when hundreds of thousands of audience are expected. There are no ticket payments; this is a free event that is open to everyone; thus it is necessary to arrive early to ensure a good location to view at the Hung Vuong Square.
It is recommended that the travelers arrive at least some few hours prior to the evening program in Viet Tri City. Security checks may be lengthy because of the magnitude of the event and travel within the city may be overwhelmed. As a way to fully host the experience, comfortable clothes, hydration and patience are elements.
Although the best opportunity of viewing the Muong gongs is during the opening ceremony, this entire period of the festival (April 17 to April 26) in itself is an enriching cultural experience. Tourists are able to visit the incense-offering ceremony, the traditional food competitions and local events in the regions.
Nonetheless, visitors who do not want to get caught in the huge throngs projected on the main holiday (April 26) will enjoy the first days of the festival. Even these days have cultural performances and give the opportunity to have a more immersive rather than hectic experience.

The performance is not merely music but a narration by rhythm and movement. The concerted gong groups make their own deep echoing soundscape, which portrays old religious opinions. The show, together with customary costumes and choreography, also provides an exclusive peep into the Muong rituals which have been conserved over the centuries.
To most of the visitors, it will be their first experience of the Muong culture, in such an enormous form. It is an experience that is both educational and emotional and links the audiences to the ancestral roots of Vietnam.
