PAP Launches Climate Action and Mental Health Groups to Address National Issues

Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong, announced on Saturday the establishment of two new groups within the People’s Action Party (PAP) to tackle climate action and mental health issues. These initiatives aim to address key challenges that span across traditional demographic lines.

Addressing National Priorities

Wong bolstered on the importance of these national issues in his first public address as PAP’s Deputy Secretary General. “These are two key national issues and also priorities for the PAP government”, he stated. This announcement was made at a thank you event at Marina Bay Sands, attended by about 400 PAP activists and partners.

Leadership and Objectives

The establishment of these groups is part of the “Refresh PAP” exercise, led by Minister of National Development Desmond Lee and other 4G leaders. Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information will lead the Mental Health Group while Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment will head the Climate Action Group.

Engaging Stakeholders

Wong underscored the party’s goal to engage a wide range of stakeholders, which includes healthcare professionals, environmental groups, community organizations and individuals. “If you have views or ideas around these issues, join the groups,” Wong encouraged. These conversations aim to better inform and shape the PAP government’s plans and policies.

PAP’s Approach to Public Engagement

The PAP regularly engages various groups ato hear their views and share their concerns through initiatives such as the Government Parliamentary Committees (GPCs). Wong poised that MPs will improve their engagement through these committees.

Climate Action and Mental Health Focus

While addressing the media, Desmond Lee explained that climate change and mental health were chosen based on talks with activists and Singaporeans. He talked about the existing threat of climate change and the immediate and said immediate and long term actions are the need of the hour. Mental health, particularly the concerns of younger Singaporeans in a fast paced environment influenced by social media, also echoed during the party refresh.

MPs Rachel Ong and Wan Rizal, co-chairs of the mental health group, articulated their objective. Ong mentioned advocating for lowering the age of consent for mental health services to 18, enhancing support for those aged 14 to 16 and improving insurance coverage for adults. Wan Rizal focused on promoting mental health literacy, accessibility and workplace mental health timeouts.

Enhancing Communication

Wong highlighted the importance of improved communication with Singaporeans. “We must do better in communications,” he acknowledged. This step includes traditional face to face interactions and leveraging digital channels like Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, TikTok and Whatsapp. The party newsletter, Petir , has also been digitized to reach a wider audience.

Wong expressed his desire to hear directly from Singaporeans on how the party can serve them better. He committed to engage more regularly with the media, use more social media platforms and conduct more on the ground visits.

Handling Polarising Issues

Addressing the media, Desmond Lee discussed the PAP’s approach to polarizing issues, such as the recent debate on sex and gender events and the Israel- Hamas conflict. He emphasized the importance of understanding and “give and take” among Singaporeans to navigate these sensitive topics. While some decisions may not please everyone, fostering a sense of understanding is crucial.

Growing the PAP Network

Wong announced that the PAP would keep its doors open to new members. Beyond the core group of party activists, the Friends of PAP Network aims to grow its partnership with corporate organizations, social service organizations and individuals. “If you have new ideas, or just want to lend a hand.. we welcome you to join us,” he said.

Acknowledging the changing political environment in Singapore, Wong affirmed the PAP’s commitment to leading the country forward. “For now, we are the government of the day,” he stated. “It is our responsibility to chart out how we can take Singapore forward, forge a strong partnership with Singaporeans and convince them that PAP remains the right choice to lead this country”.
