PAGASA announced on Monday, May 11, that the Philippines is under one of its most hot and humid weather events of the year, with 28 areas in its “Danger” category in terms of heat index. Thousands of Filipinos nationwide will find themselves facing unsafe weather these days due to several provinces and cities forecast heat index temperature as high as 44C.

Extreme temperatures came when many were wishing for the arrival of the tropical depression Caloy, which brought with it cooler weather and widespread rainfall. But, the wind area came under a landslide as it passed over the Philippine Sea, and for the most part, most parts of Luzon and Visayas are hot, dry and extremely humid.

PAGASA Raises Alarm Over Dangerous Heat Levels

The “Danger” category for heat index readings is those within the range of 42°C to 51°C, according to PAGASA. Eventually, direct sunlight or physical exercise in outdoor conditions may result in dehydration, headache, heat exhaustion and muscle cramps, all the way up to heat stroke.

Other heavy-sun communities such as Dagupan City, Aparri, Casiguran, San Jose (Occidental Mindoro), Cuyo (Palawan), and Dumangas (Iloilo) all are expected to have an HI of around 44°C today.Several major urban communities like Metro Manila are under danger zone.

Why Tropical Depression Caloy Failed to Bring Rain?

Many Filipinos hoped that Tropical Depression Caloy would bring down the temperature this week as it would bring rain showers all over the country. Unfortunately, PAGASA said that the storm started to deteriorate and will likely not affect most parts of the country.

Caloy developed really slowly and didn’t make it to the Philippines, which explains the continuing warm and easterly weather conditions over the country. This has kept an ambiance of a hot and humid environment in many of the provinces and aggravated the heat wave situation.

With no rain and high humidity, temperatures are even hotter than the recorded temperature.

Why the Heat Feels More Severe in 2026?

The heat index takes into account air temperature and also the humidity level. When there is a high level of humidity in the air the body does not have to sweat as much to cool off as the sweat evaporates at a slower rate.

This is the reason why many people are becoming dizzy, tired and uncomfortable as they continue to stay indoors. The weather has also helped to heighten concerns for heat-related illnesses with children, elderly and individuals with underlying medical conditions.

Too many hours in extreme heat, without drinking fluids, is a real hazard, health experts say.

Tips To Survive the Extreme Heatwave

Authorities are urging people to stay off of the streets, particularly from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM, the peak hours of the day for high solar impacts. Drinking is seen as one of the best methods to avoid heat-related illness during this time.

It is advised to drink water frequently even when one is not thirsty. Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing will also help keep the body cool during the day. Where possible, it is recommended to stay inside or in an area where you can be in a cool, sheltered, and airy space.

Hygiene experts are also urging Filipinos to be mindful of their consumption of too much caffeine, alcohol or sweetened beverages as these can add to dehydration. Anyone who has any of the symptoms of dizziness, nausea, headache, palpitations or fainting should visit a health care provider right away.

Schools and Offices Closely Monitoring the Situation

With the hot weather conditions often using asynchronous classes and temporary alterations to school and university schedules are now being considered at several schools and Universities. With the heat wave going on, there are greater concerns appearing in online conversations between students and parents about commuting to and from school and classroom conditions.

The workplaces are also being encouraged to consider providing adequate ventilation, hydration stations and shaded rest areas for the workers, especially those who are outdoors most of the time. The government reminds employers to do extra to keep workers safe when it’s really hot.
