Robson Green has returned to one of Scotland’s best-known legends. The actor and presenter searches for the truth behind the Loch Ness Monster in his series World’s Most Amazing Walks.
A 73-Mile Trek Through The Highlands
In the Scotland episode, Green hikes the Great Glen Way. The 73-mile route runs through a rift valley from the foot of Ben Nevis to Loch Ness. Along the way he tries lock-keeping on the canal and takes to the water to learn about Nessie. Green first visited the loch in 2009, when it featured in his ITV series Robson Green’s Wild Swimming Adventure.
The Boat Wake Theory
Green’s guide on the monster question is Adrian Shine, founder of the Loch Ness Project and leader of the 1987 Operation Deepscan hunt. Shine believes most sightings of a huge creature are really wakes from large vessels. He points to the early 19th-century Caledonian Canal, which brought big boats through the lochs of the Great Glen. In his view, those wakes created the multi-humped image of the monster.
No Clear Answer For Green
Green said the conversation left him without a firm conclusion. He recalled that the Deepscan expedition could not prove a creature exists in the loch but could not disprove it either.
Another Expert Believes
Gary Campbell runs the Official Loch Ness Monster Sighting Register. He argues that any creature must live deep in the loch and only occasionally surfaces, which would explain the few sightings. He says most reports are easily explained, including one photo that turned out to be paddleboarders. Yet four or five a year remain unexplained, he says.
Why Nessie Endures
The programme blends scenery with folklore. It shows why Loch Ness still draws people, even as the science points to ordinary explanations. Whether Nessie is a living animal or a trick of the water, the legend continues to pull in viewers and visitors alike.
