Ask a shopper in Jakarta how she bought her last pair of shoes and she may tell you it happened during a live video, with a quick chat to the seller and a wallet payment, all inside one app. That small scene explains a very big number. Asia is expected to bring in about US$3.7 trillion in e-commerce revenue by 2029, more than twice what North America will manage. Brands that still treat the region as an add-on to their home market are already behind.
Where the Growth Is Really Coming From
China got there first, and online sales there now make up close to half of all retail. The fastest gains today are in India and Southeast Asia. The Southeast Asian market was worth around US$159 billion in 2024 and is heading for roughly US$215 billion to US$230 billion by the end of 2026.
Phones explain most of it. Cheap handsets, low data prices and India’s UPI payment system have pulled in millions of people who skipped laptops and, in many cases, never held a bank card. Add social commerce, where people spot a product in a short video and buy it without leaving the app, and it is easy to see why TikTok Shop, Shopee and Lazada keep growing.
How to Win Without Copying Your Home Market
Start local. Build a store that loads quickly on a weak signal and speaks your customer’s language. Accept the payments people already trust, such as e-wallets, UPI or cash on delivery. Answer questions on WhatsApp, LINE or Zalo, because many buyers will never write an email.
Think about joining Shopee, Lazada or Flipkart before building your own site. Bain & Company calls these connected networks of shopping, payments and delivery retail ecosystems, and they are becoming the normal way to sell across Asia.
Check the rules before you launch. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act and Indonesia’s personal data law both limit how you handle customer information, and import duties vary a lot from one country to the next. A local partner who has been through it all will save you months.
