With the rollout of the new biometric clearance system, Singapore’s Changi Airport is one of the first airports in the world to provide travellers largely without their passports.

Many passengers can now pass immigration with just a facial and iris scan, without having to present their physical passports a number of times, as part of Singapore’s “New Clearance Concept.” It is designed to minimize waiting times, safeguards the security and provides a seamless airport experience for locals and international visitors alike.

Travelers passing through the immigration gates of Changi terminals will be able to process immigration clearance in about a 10-second automated time using biometric gates in May 2026.

How the New Digital Identity System Works?

The biometric travel system is a system in Singapore that allows for biometric identification and verification of travelers. Travelers must be added to the immigration database prior to use of the automated gates.

Permanent residents, LTOs and Singapore citizens should ideally already have records of their biometrics from their last passport or identity card. The passport-free gates enable most residents to access their homes as soon as they are opened and can be used without the need of special registration.

For foreign visitors, however, it will require the initial verification process when entering Singapore. On this initial entry, however, travelers will still be required to present their physical passports for immigration verification, during which facial and iris data would be captured and used in the future.

After registering into the automated gates, travelers departing the gate don’t need to remove their passports from their pockets.

Why is the MyICA App Important?

Although travellers may not be required to present physical passports during their arrival to an airport, electronically-signed travel declarations are still necessary. Previously, Singapore had been requiring most arriving travelers to file the SG Arrival card upon their arrival at the Singapore airport.horesestriderPaperless Entry is now required as well.

SG Arrival Card is to be submitted within 3 days prior to arrival at Singapore. With the digital declaration, a traveler’s identity, travel history and biometric data will be linked in the immigration system.

The MyICA app also features a “Group QR Code” function for travellers coming by land to Singapore at Woodlands or Tuas. This will enable families or groups to scan a single QR code, rather than several passports becoming lost on their own.

What Happens at Changi Airport’s Biometric Gates?

Changi Airport’s new clearance process aims to be virtually touchless. Once passengers check-in with the airline, they go directly to the automated immigration line without having to put down their passport.

Multi-modal recognition technology that scans the facial feature and the pattern of the eyes’ iris at the same time. The gates open automatically within seconds, after verifying the traveller’s identity.

The average processing time for clearance has dropped from over five minutes during the traditional passport clearance process to about 10 seconds now, says Singapore authority.

It is now in use at several terminals at Changi Airport and more plans are currently being implemented to improve Singapore’s border control operations.

Important Things Travelers Should Know

Although the Singapore passports are not required for passport-free clearance, it is strongly recommended that travellers should still have their physical passports whenever they are travelling internationally. It is possible that traditional passport controls will still take place at the arrival airport in destination countries.

Persons travelling should also take off their face masks, sunglasses and large hats when using biometric gates as these may interfere with facial and iris recognition. Some patterned or colored contact lenses can also cause inaccuracies in scans.

The children under 6 years are not able to use the immigration lanes with the Biometric Facial Covering system at the present time and are required to throw in the manual immigration counters with their parents or guardians.

Why Is Singapore’s New System Getting Global Attention?

Singapore’s biometric immigration system is being seen as a pivotal development toward the future of global travel. The system is very fast, automated, and makes use of digital identity verification, so airports around the world are closely monitoring it.

The new infrastructure will cut down on the queues common among travelers and limit the number of times they have to go through the documents. It also shines a light on the trend of airports adopting contactless and AI-based people processing.

Biometric technology is developing in a rapidly changing manner and the passportless travel system in Singapore could eventually impact all airports in Asia and beyond.

Final Thoughts

Singapore’s new biometric boarding and immigration is a major paradigm shift in the modern travel experience. 4Cs’ facial recognition, iris scanning and digital travel declaration technology offers the airport one of the most advanced immigration experiences in the world today.

Digital identity verification is not a universal replacement for physical passports for all global travel but for those travelling through Singapore, it will make getting through the airport much faster and smoother.
