In their clean energy transition, France-based energy giant TotalEnergies has consolidated its presence in Asia through a historic long-term deal with Google. In this agreement, renewable electricity will be provided to drive the fast growing digital infrastructure by Google in Southeast Asia. The deal is an expression of the rising requirements of hyperscale data centres with the advent of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital services. With some countries such as Malaysia evolving into data hub destinations in the region, it is increasingly becoming important that such collaborations between the global technology and renewable energy players are made to see to it that sustainable growth, energy security, and long-term targets of reducing carbon are achieved.
TotalEnergies has also declared a 21-year power agreement to provide 1 terawatt hour (TWH) of renewable electricity to Google operations in Malaysia. The strategic transaction will help TotalEnergies Google data centres Malaysia to increase its digital presence in the region as the tech giant continues its growth in the region. The electricity will be produced by the future Citra Energies solar plant that is planned to start its construction in early 2026.
The solar facility will supply the clean energy to Google data centres in Malaysia once it is operational, and enable the company to achieve its sustainability goals. The agreement will be operative in the first quarter of 2026, and it will be one of the long-term purchase power agreements (PPAs) in the Southeast Asian market.
The agreement emphasizes the fact that data centres energy demand is increasing at a global pace. The increasing AI training, cloud data, and high-performance computing workloads are exceeding the capacity of a significant portion of the local grids. Through its collaboration with TotalEnergies, Google will have a predictable and consistent power source to TotalEnergies Google data centres Malaysia as well as mitigating the risk associated with volatility of fossil fuel prices.
In the case of TotalEnergies, the acquisition is in line with its overall strategy of increasing renewable generation and long-term corporate PPAs. The company has been undertaking an active process of positioning itself as an important energy partner among the Big Tech companies with scalable, low-carbon solutions.
The deal is the second one to come after another deal signed in November, according to which TotalEnergies will also provide renewable electricity to Google-based data centres in Ohio, in the US. All these alliances highlight the worldwide character of the energy demands by Big Tech and the contribution made by renewables to this demand.
Malaysia especially is becoming an industry as a data centre destination because of the strategic positioning, enhancing digital infrastructure and favourable investment environment. The TotalEnergies Google data centres Malaysia partnership consolidates the Malaysian expectations of developing sustainably and as well as drawing in high-value foreign investment.
The deal has high environmental, social and governance (ESG) implications besides commercial gains. The long-term renewable agreements can reduce the carbon emissions, stabilize the power prices, and promote the new clean energy sources. With additional technology companies competing to scale AI, this type of agreement will likely dominate energy market trends in Asia and other regions, and TotalEnergies Google data centres Malaysia can act as an interesting example.
