Online rumors have been spread to state that Meta is considering closing its Meta Quest in 2026. This has raised a great concern among the user population- particularly whether this will impact the large platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
But how well is this really the case?
There is an official confirmation of the closure of the Horizon World on Meta Quest by June 2026 but there is no announcement that Meta will be closing down the entire business. Although the company is still reorganizing its metaverse and VR strategy, Meta Quest will still be one of the major elements of the long-term vision.
Similar to most technological products, Meta Quest can also experience some changes as an update, reorganization, or refocusing, however, the company has not declared their full termination yet.
The bewilderment is probably caused by the fact that the continuous debates related to Meta investments in virtual reality and the metaverse. The news related to the reduction of a budget, its reorganization, or a reduced pace of VR adoption can be in some cases understood as a shutdown.
These claims are exaggerated by the social media that produce viral rumors about part of the facts.
Although alterations might occur in the VR part of the team within Meta, such social media as Facebook and Instagram are independent, and they are at the core of the business strategy.
These applications boast of billions of users around the globe, and they make great income in advertising. It is not mentioned that Meta will close them in 2026 or sooner.
Meta is still balancing between social media applications and such emerging technologies as virtual reality and AI. Although the concept of the metaverse has become diversified, it is not long gone.
Otherwise, the company seems to be fine-tuning its strategy and weighing up investing in spots where growth will have the most impact and reviewing those that should be improved.
This could be extended to support, update, and even further product development instead of just killing off, in the case of the Meta Quest users. Business continues as usual for Facebook and Instagram users.
As usual, the most effective method of keeping abreast of situations is sticking to official news as opposed to the viral assertions.
The fact that Facebook and Instagram may follow suit with the closure of Meta Quest in 2026, in addition to the fact that Meta is shutting down, is mostly hypothetical rather than factual.
At present, Meta keeps all major platforms, which it has no intention of shutting down. There is no need to worry about losing the favorite apps or devices used by the users.
