UAE provides earthquake aid worth $100 million to Turkey, Syria

An aid package worth $100 million has been ordered by the president, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria.

The assistance will be distributed evenly between Syria and Turkey, both of which were severely damaged by yesterday’s magnitude 7.8 earthquake and its aftershocks, resulting in significant building and infrastructure damage and mass casualties.

Notably, the UAE has contributed to humanitarian activities on a global scale and is dedicated to helping burgeoning, amiable civilizations.

The UAE offers development aid in addition to emergency and other humanitarian support. The UAE Foreign Assistance Policy, the country’s long-term development cooperation plan aimed at eradicating poverty and advancing world peace and prosperity, was introduced by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2016. The UAE is still dedicated to helping its partner nations flourish.

The UAE declared in October 2022 that it will give Ukrainian residents affected by the situation an additional $100 million in humanitarian help. The UAE started running an air bridge in August 2022 to deliver $13.6 million in humanitarian aid to Pakistan for those impacted by excessive rains and floods.

As of July 2021, the UAE had shipped a total of 2,154 tonnes of medical supplies, including ventilators, screening tools, personal safety gear, and testing kits, to 135 different nations. 196 medical evacuation flights were despatched in all.

The UAE gave more than AED28.5 billion to 42 countries in 2018, exceeding the UN’s ODA objective of 0.7 per cent by contributing 0.93 per cent of ODA/GNI ratio for the sixth consecutive year.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Development Assistance Committee, designated the UAE as a participating member in 2014. (DAC). The UAE is permitted to attend meetings of the DAC subsidiary bodies as well as high-level and senior-level events thanks to this position. As a result, the UAE is granted a seat at the table in discussions on global development and is widely acknowledged as a top donor.
