KUALA LUMPUR – As a show of support and solidarity to the current government Perikatan Nasional amid the Covid-19 pandemic and economic woes, UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid calls for a “political ceasefire” amid the political struggles amongs parties.
In a statement released today, Zahid said that all party leaders who holds a cabinet position have been instructed to focus their efforts to take care of the safety and welfare of the people to ease their burden brought upon by the pandemic.
He added that the cooperation among parties should be further strengthened to ensure political stability amid the threats of Covid-19 and economic uncertainty.
The UMNO president said that the party will be supporting the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government in their aim of helping the people and that the reason for the ‘political ceasefire’ was to ensure that the government is addressing the Covid-19 issue and helping the people who are suffering hardship due to the economic obstacle.
Yesterday, Umno and PAS released a statement announcing a new political coalition under the name Muafakat Nasional (MN).
The new coalition did not include Bersatu – the party of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Umno also issued a statement saying it was reconsidering its support for the current government as several UMNO top brass openly admitting tension being high with UMNO and Bersatu due to UMNO’s position in the coalition.
