Kumamoto and the devastation from the massive 7.1-magnitude quake has moved into a new phase, as relief operations now prioritize water and providing assistance for those suffering from the earthquake, and repairing houses. The number of dead has now reached 39 and there are 205 wounded, seven of whom are seriously injured.
A notable new development is the arrival in the USA of military aid: they flew water to Kumamoto with the aid of something called an ‘airlift’. The support is especially timely, as ~36,400 households still depend on water supply issues and getting access to clean water is one of the communities’ top priorities.
There are about 699 homes completely destroyed; approximately 18,000 homes have been damaged by the earthquake with about 6,500 people remaining in evacuation centres. The authorities and relief organizations are making efforts to provide basic services and improve the safety of the residents.
There is also a growing effort to send out volunteers, as the initial crisis response phase transitions to cleanup and reconstruction. Volunteers, mainly from outside the community, are assisting, helping communities like Hikawa and Yatshiro to get rid of rubbish and to offer disaster assistance to inhabitants of those areas.
There is also increased awareness of children and families. Safe play spaces are being set up for children affected by displacement, in addition to basic relief, in line with increased awareness of emotional wellbeing.
Meanwhile, worrying and misleading messages and contents relating to the quake are being circulated on social media. Press and authorities had encouraged people to fact check due to misinformation and rumours over the ghostly video.
