After a magnitude 5.4 sea quake hit off Occidental Mindoro on the morning of 07 August 2026, and resulting precautionary evacuations were conducted in various areas of Metro Manila and adjacent provinces. The earthquake occurred at 10.38 a.m., Philippine Time, 13 kilometers southwest of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, according to the PHIVOLCS. The epicentre of the quake was offshore, but it had a shallow depth of 14 kilometres and, as a result, earth shaking was evident.
This event has been reported as a tectonic earthquake by PHIVOLCS that is caused by the movement of faults on the earth’s surface. There was no threat of a tsunami caused by the quake, authorities said, but residents in affected regions were told to be alert after the event for “one or two days”.
Areas That Experienced the Strongest Shaking
The highest intensity recorded was the Intensity V (Strong) felt in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro. Several areas in Oriental Mindoro were also affected by Intensity V such as Calapan City, Naujan, Puerto Galera, San Teodoro and Victoria.
Meanwhile, Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) was experienced in Abra de Ilog, Sablayan and Taal, Batangas. Weaker shaking was felt in Quezon City, Batangas City, General Trias, San Pedro and Parañaque City which experienced shaking of weak to slightly felt intensity.
Metro Manila Felt the Tremors
Even though the epicenter of the earthquake is more than 150 kilometers away from Metro Manila, many people living in high-rise buildings felt that the building swayed around. As part of the safety measures during an earthquake, the office workers were temporarily evacuated in Makati City, Mandaluyong City, Quezon City and Manila City.
Routine inspections of the MRT-3, LRT-1, LRT-2 and PNR systems were also done by transport operators right after the earthquake. The railway was reopened after its safety was confirmed by the checks.
PHIVOLCS Advises Preparedness for Aftershocks
PHIVOLCS cautioned that there could be more aftershocks, so people can prepare in the affected areas in Mindoro, Calabarzon and Metro Manila after the earthquake. No significant damage has been reported, but it’s normal after a moderate earthquake to experience aftershocks, which can last for many hours or days.
The authorities also recommended the communities to check their emergency plans, heavy furniture bolstering, and keeping updated with official PHIVOLCS communications, instead of relying on unverified information from websites.
