On November 5th of every year, Filipinos that are present on Negros Island celebrate the historic revolution of 1898 against the over three hundred years of Spanish rule in the Philippines.

Negros Day or Cinco de Noviembre commemorates the day in which the island gained independence from Spanish rule.

The commemoration is still a significant reminder of the courage, determination and efforts of the Filipinos for self-government in the Philippine Revolution.

Negros Day Marks the Historic November 5 Uprising

On November 5, 1898, a well organised revolt against the Spanish colonial government broke out in the island of Negros. Under the leadership of Juan Araneta (South) and Aniceto Lacson (North), the movement was able to pose a challenge to Spanish control and on November 6, the colonial administration surrendered.

How Filipino Revolutionaries Defeated Spanish Colonial Forces

The revolutionaries seem to have adopted an unusual military tactic to give the impression of a large armament by wrapping palm trunks around cannons and wooden rifles. It was a deception that helped win the Spanish government’s submission and shows the value of planning and psychological skills.

Juan Araneta and Aniceto Lacson Led the Revolution

Juan Araneta and Aniceto Lacson were prominent organisers of revolutionary groups and unifier of the resistance in Negros. They were also instrumental in building a revolutionary government after the surrender of the Spaniards. The movement was an important contribution to the bigger struggle for Philippine independence in the region.

Why the 1898 Negros Revolution Still Matters Today

The rebellion illustrated the role of the local community in the struggle for Philippine Independence. The revolution has become a historical event, although the political situation on the island was complicated by American colonialism thereafter. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines has resources to document the country’s revolutionary history.
