Rainfall has caused widespread flooding, landslides and deep waterlogging in parts of northern India and Nepal, killing more than 70 and inundating homes, infrastructure and ag fields. Rivers continue to rise with flood warnings being issued and rescue operations elusive of communities affected. The current estimates are 56 dead in Uttar Pradesh in India, 14 dead in Nepal.
India: Uttar Pradesh Reports 56 Deaths
Uttar Pradesh saw 66.5 millimetres of rain from September 25 to in the morning of the 27th while the normal rainfall in a similar period is 7.6 millimetres, according to state relief commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod.
56 people have died due to the rain, and over 46 people have been injured and more than 1,000 homes are damaged. Relief procedures are being coordinated, losses to agriculture are being evaluated and aid for the impacted community being arranged.
Higher levels have led to some river systems issuing warnings as well. Rescue Operations and Flood Warnings Continue
Rescue operations and relief distribution are ongoing in both countries in the waterlogged area. The police have appealed to people in the disaster-prone areas to abide by the official warning and dodge the flooded roads, as well as watch for any sudden rise in the level of the river.
