More than 1400 people are still missing and the death toll has been pushed up to 469 in the aftermath of devastating flash floods in central Nepal, a latest report estimates. Searches are continuing to be stepped up all over where heavy tails of water, mud and debris have been seen by rescue teams, who are estimating that the death toll may continue to rise.
Some of the worst affected districts are Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, in which whole communities have been washed away or buried. Roads and bridges are damaged, telecommunications and water are affected with hydropower infrastructure also damaged.
Helicopters and other emergency equipment are being used to reach remote villages, as well as areas downstream, by the Nepal Army, police and disaster-response teams. The challenging terrain and transport infrastructure have hampered rescue operations.
Police are also scouring the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers where people and debris could have been washed away from the areas of disaster. The list of those who are reported missing also includes foreign nationals, such as travelers, trekkers and pilgrims.
Since post-flood debris in part of the Bhote Koshi blocked a part of the river, a new danger has appeared and the possibility of another sudden flooding has been raised. Regional officials are closely watching the situation and are potentially studying the impacts that could occur downstream.
The disaster has also been causing a mounting humanitarian crisis, where thousands have been displaced and necessary services are affected. Due to lack of access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare, children and vulnerable families are at higher risk.
The rescue operations continue to be the main priority in hopes that potential survivors can be found and that vulnerable communities are evacuated and no further loss of life occurs.
