Bangkok has been battered by intense flooding since a low-pressure system followed by heavy rains during the southwest monsoon dumped almost 300mm (11.8 inches) of rain in 48 hours. In many areas in the capital city, the exceptional rains caused insufficient drainage and canal unavailability which rendered transport restricted and forced people to take up temporary shelters.
The Governor of Bangkok, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) extended the flood disaster declaration to include all 50 districts in the City of Bangkok to enable emergency teams to gather resources and plan relief efforts for the entire city.
Flooding Disrupts Roads Across Bangkok
Min Buri, Khlong Sam Wa, Lat Krabang, Ari and On Nut are among the flooded areas with a few of the worst floods being recorded in eastern and eastern areas of the country. Numerous vehicles were stranded for long periods of time, particularly on the Phetchaburi Road and Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.
The flooding also took a toll on the population that were already vulnerable. Over 900 people settled into temporary shelters, many of which were set up in local schools. The rescue effort also included moving to medical centres the people confined to bed and whose location grew in the waters surrounding residential areas.
Bangkok Activates Emergency Drainage Measures
To control the large amount of water, BMA ceased to make use of pumping stations which were operating on full duty. Water drains have been carried out in waterways up to up to 1200 cubic metres per second to alleviate the pressure of already full canals, authorities said.
Over a million sandbags were also handed out to low-lying homes and towns in areas bordering canals. The measures were the continuation of the protection of homes and critical areas during the drainage operations.
Free Parking Offered for Residents
In order to encourage residents to keep their vehicles safe from the flooding, BMA and public transport operators used their multi-storey MRT Park and Ride facilities, providing free access until October 2. The program will permit people to shift cars to the higher parking spots in the emergency.
It has also necessitated a larger government response to flooding. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul instead of a scheduled visit to London, cut short his trip to skip home to see how things are going in Bangkok during the flood.

The recent flood is a reminder of the challenges flooding can impose on the city’s drainage infrastructure. Even the most extensive pumping power stations have limits on their ability to keep up with large volumes of water that may arrive over a very short period of time, when canals become full.
Drainage, evacuation support, medical assistance and protecting transport infrastructure remain at the top of the list as the rains continue.
