On the days of the Vegetarian Festival, you might find the streets of Thailand lined with yellow flags as well as food stalls and restaurants serving up edible but incredibly realistic fake meat. So, what is Jay food? Jay food (เจ) isn’t just vegetarian food in Thailand. It is more traditional and does not include animal products, or a few vegetables that are too spicy. Understanding authentic Jay food is essential to ensure safe and authentic consumption of Jay food during the festival.

What Is Jay Food in Thailand?

Jay food is a traditional dish of the Thai-Chinese people and is associated with the Vegetarian Festival (Tesagan Kin Jay). The practice has been associated with purification, religion and worship of the Nine Emperor Gods. TAT calls the festival a “spiritual practice” that is celebrated over nine days in the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

Unlike ordinary Thai vegetarian food, Jay generally excludes:

  • Meat, poultry and seafood
  • Eggs and dairy products
  • Fish sauce, shrimp paste and other animal-based seasonings
  • Garlic and onions, along with other traditionally avoided pungent vegetables
  • Alcohol during the traditional observance

Although it’s a rule set from a religious and cultural tradition, not just a modern vegan diet, this makes Jay food more akin to vegan food. Festival attendees refrain from eating meat, seafood, dairy, and spicy foods like onions and garlic, TAT says.

How to Spot Authentic Jay Food Stalls

Look for the Yellow Jay Flag

The easiest way to tell it is a Jay is the yellow Jay flag. The yellow and red signs with the character เจ are usually found in the market and in restaurants during Thailand’s Vegetarian Festival.

TAT has specifically referred to the streets during the festival as being draped in red-and-yellow flags with Chinese characters.

But just because a dish has a colorful stall doesn’t mean it’s a Jay dish. Look for the เจ symbol and in doubt consult the vendor.

Check the Ingredients

Tofu, mushrooms, vegetables, noodles, rice and faux meats are all authentic Jay food. Popular festival foods can be made using soy protein, gluten and tofu to mimic duck, pork or other familiar foods.

Be particularly careful with dishes that look vegetarian but may traditionally contain:

  • Fish sauce
  • Oyster sauce
  • Shrimp paste
  • Meat-based broth
  • Egg

The safest approach is to choose a dedicated Jay stall rather than simply ordering a regular Thai dish without meat.

Jay Food vs Thai Vegetarian Food

The terms are Thai notations, which are significant. Traditionally, Jay (เจ) is a word for food system if it is strict to adhere to it and mangsawirat is usually used to describe vegetarian food.

This distinction is important for the traveller since vegetarian food may not implement all the criteria for Jay food.

If you’re a strict vegan, order Jay food and double check the ingredients before you place your order.

Where to Experience the Vegetarian Festival

The festival is one of the most popular events in Thailand to visit Phuket. Phuket is one of the main destinations for Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2026, which is listed as one of the official festivals of TAT.

The festival is also held in other locations like Bangkok, Trang and Hat Yai. TAT points out that there are styles of processions for each region – big religious ones, food-oriented community ones.

TAT’s event calendar for 2026 states that the Phuket Vegetarian Festival starts from October 10th. Before visiting, travellers are advised to refer to the local shrine or provincial programme for the full programme.

FAQs

Jay (เจ) refers to a strict Thai-Chinese vegetarian food tradition that avoids animal products and traditionally excludes pungent vegetables such as garlic and onions.

Is Jay food vegan?

Jay food is generally plant-based and excludes meat, seafood, eggs and dairy. However, it follows additional religious food rules that go beyond a standard modern vegan diet.

How can I identify a Jay food stall?

Look for the yellow flag with the red เจ symbol. During the Vegetarian Festival, these signs are widely used to identify stalls serving Jay food.
