Halloween has become a popular seasonal celebration in a few cities across Asia as the month of October offers them colourful decorations, creative costumes and spooky treats. People are taking to haunted houses in Singapore, parties in Japan and street festivals in Hong Kong to enjoy the occasion in new ways. Different ways of Halloween celebrations across Asia reflect the adaptation of a festival originally from Western culture.

Some want to go to a theme party with their friends and others are excited about family outings, special food and costume contests. Halloween is not an equal celebration throughout Asia, though. Many of the elements of local culture, traditions and public safety are responsible for the way people participate in the celebrations.

Japan: Costumes and Creative Celebrations

Halloween has become popular in Japan, especially amongst younger people. One of the main attractions of the festivities is the costumes inspired by anime, films, video games and horror characters. Seasonal decorations and themed food are also available from cafes, shops and restaurants.

Tokyo is set for a few Halloween events this October. On October 17, 2026, there will be a costume contest and community event at Shibuya Stream. Meanwhile, police have put out a traffic alert around Shibuya Station for the evening of Oct. 30 through early on Nov. 1, which will see a big crowd. These set-ups demonstrate the importance of tourists being aware of local regulations prior to celebrating.

Singapore: Haunted Houses and Family Fun

There are Halloween attractions in Singapore for both thrill-seekers as well as families. Halloween Horror Nights 14 will take place on certain nights from September 25 to November 1, 2026 at Universal Studios Singapore.

There are 4 haunted houses, 2 scare zones and three live shows. There are attractions for those who want to see some terror as well as separate family attractions for those who don’t. The resort also recommends that for younger children (under 13), Halloween Horror Nights might be too scary.

Offering a combination of fun, visitors have the option of going for a more frightening experience or for seasonal fun instead.

Hong Kong: Street Parties and Cosplay Events

The Halloween programme in Hong Kong is growing and now has a month-long event. The City’s first Halloween cosplay events, planned for October 17, 24 and 31, 2026, will be held across the City, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Attractions will be on display with costumes, music, themed street parties and activities. One of the areas that offer Halloween events includes Lan Kwai Fong, a popular district for nightlife. The celebrations provide additional chances for residents and visitors to dress up, take pictures and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Food, Traditions and Safety Remain Important

There is also the opportunity for restaurants, cafes and hotels to provide limited-time offers at Halloween. Some of the recurring themes from TableCheck’s look at Halloween in Asia include themed cakes, special beverages, and decorated dining areas as well as creative food presentations. These kinds of services enable individuals to participate in the celebration without being at a big party.

But Halloween is not to be confused with the traditional festivals in Asia dedicated to the dead. In some Asian cultures, for instance, the Hungry Ghost Festival is a time to remember and respect the spirits of the departed, not a time for fear and fun.

Please note that dates and ticket conditions for the season’s events and local crowd warnings should be reviewed before travelling, as the season rolls towards its peak. Halloween in Asia is a blend of entertainment from around the world and local creativity, whether it be through the costumes or the themed food or the haunted attractions.
