Indonesia Haze Crisis

The international community is increasingly pressuring Indonesia over forest and peat fires that generate toxic air pollution in the Southeast Asian region. The impact of the Indonesia Haze Crisis has caused disruption in the lives of people in Singapore and Malaysia, and has led to concerns regarding public health, environmental law enforcement and regional cooperation. Police and fire officials are stepping up fire efforts after asking other authorities to take more action.

Indonesia Haze Crisis: Forest Fires Trigger Regional Emergency

Thick smoke has been observed from wildfires on Sumatra and Kalimantan, worsened by long dry spells which are related to El Niño. This year, Indonesia is facing one of its worst fires in many years. Dry weather may extend regional haze threat, says ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre.

Singapore Takes Action Against Indonesian Companies

Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) has sent out preventive notices to 10 Indonesian companies under its Transboundary Haze Pollution Act. The notices call for firefighting activities and strategies to stop additional fire. Singaporean authorities have emphasized the responsibility of the company, but receiving a notice does not make the company legally liable.

Malaysia Raises Diplomatic Concerns Over Toxic Haze

High level engagement has been held with Indonesia as a result of bad air quality impacting on communities and disrupting education in Malaysia. The two governments are talking about actions to take to overcome the catastrophe. Malaysia has also called for greater cooperation among ASEAN countries to tackle the frequent transboundary pollution.

Indonesia’s Firefighting Response and ASEAN Cooperation

The government of President Prabowo Subianto has deployed tens of thousands of people to help put out the flames. However, the weather conditions are challenging and peatlands are still being burned. ASEAN is readying more talks on transboundary haze, and environmental NGOs are calling for an increased crackdown on companies tied to deforestation.
