The renewed economic engagement by President Donald Trump with Moscow has raised uncomfortable questions about Washington’s commitment to Kyiv. In recent days, the sanctions lifted on Russian diesel exports have added to diplomatic uncertainty, and disagreement over military aid has added to the mix. As the Trump Russia Deals debate shows, there’s a challenging question that can’t be avoided: can Washington push for peace without compromising Ukraine’s negotiating hand?

Trump Russia Deals Raise Questions About US Priorities

The Trump administration had temporarily relaxed limits on Russian diesel exports, citing further supplies will help lower energy prices. But critics say Moscow could make money off the invasion and continue to do so. From my perspective, to allow economic concessions without the buy-in of peace agreements without enforcement is to possibly reward aggression over meaningful negotiations.

Why Ukraine Fears Losing American Support

Ukraine is heavily reliant on American intelligence and air-defence equipment, as well as military coordination. There have been some worries about that assistance lately, especially as it pertains to recent disagreements between Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While there has been ongoing intelligence sharing with Washington, there remains uncertainty as to how much support that will provide Kyiv in its battle and in its diplomatic efforts.

Can Economic Diplomacy Bring Russia to Negotiations?

Trump’s advisers are thought to see energy concessions as a reward to start talks with Moscow. Diplomatic flexibility could bring opportunities that sanctions don’t offer, supporters say. But by giving the economic benefits first, before Russian commitments can be measured, that could diminish the pressure on Mr Putin to make compromises.

What Trump’s Russia Strategy Means for NATO

America’s policy shifts are leaving a problem for European allies. Consequently, if the United States is less willing to give, Europe will need to spend more on defence and accelerate on defence coordination. I think that NATO should do more to secure Ukraine’s future but at the same time have the dialogue, never to replace credible deterrence.
