Washington and Tel Aviv are discussing increased military pressure against Iran, and U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reportedly had further talks on the matter.

The talks with Iran are the latest in a series of negotiations between Trump and Netanyahu, which have been marred by the reports of military preparations, disagreement over timing and uncertainties about diplomatic negotiations.

The leaders spoke on Nov. 1 while Washington was mulling on resuming operations, according to the Wall Street Journal. But there has not been a final presidential order to strike publicly confirmed for another attack.

Trump Netanyahu Iran Talks Raise Military Questions

An Axios investigation at the time of this writing indicated that there were talks of potential strikes. The White House challenged this claim, and Netanyahu’s office refused to provide specifics on the private meetings. The conflicting statements fail to clarify what intent the leaders have.

US and Israel Reportedly Prepare New Iran Strikes

An ABC News report quoted intelligence officials in Israel as saying that they were getting ready for new operations to resume after Nov. 3. The White House had already rejected the notion of strikes prior to the US midterm elections, but it didn’t clarify what would happen if military action were to follow.

Iran Nuclear Programme Remains Central Dispute

The nuclear threat from Iran is prominent in the talks. Military preparations also may lead to heightened diplomatic tensions, according to NPR reporting. Tehran has said it is ready to respond, but it has insisted negotiations are still open.

Regional Escalation Threatens Middle East Stability

Then there’s the potential repercussions of renewed hostilities to the region’s energy infrastructure, commercial shipping and civilian security. Military experts say further strikes could lead to Iranian counterattacks, which would make it harder to reach a peace deal and drive up economic uncertainty outside of the war.
