The upcoming U.S. mid-term elections on Nov. 3 may represent a pivot in U.S. policy toward Iran. President Donald Trump now is getting a lot more questions concerning whether he’s going to back increased military aggression or continue with negotiations with Tehran.
Trump Netanyahu Iran Strikes talks have picked up steam since Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu apparently pressured Washington to launch military strikes after elections.
But on Axios reported on November 1 that Trump now backs giving diplomacy a chance, meaning military escalation is not in the cards.
Netanyahu’s Pressure Creates a Strategic Dilemma for Trump
Netanyahu is said to be in favor of resuming the strikes to bring a blow to the Iranian military and nuclear programs. But Trump has to weigh Israel’s security needs against those of the U.S. economy and another potential drawn-out conflict. Cooperation with the military doesn’t imply the same priorities on strategy for both leaders.
US Midterm Elections Could Reshape Washington’s Iran Strategy
Trump has made it clear publicly that he will not attack Iran until Nov. 3, at which point his options remain unclear. Washington is still weighing diplomatic and military options, The Associated Press reports. Timing of elections might affect political calculations but timing does not mean renewed strikes are in the cards.
Renewed Iran Strikes Could Destabilise the Middle East
If a conflict over the islands were to occur, it could pose a risk to the shipping routes in the Gulf, energy infrastructure and regional security. Neighbours are worried of more escalation, and Iran is threatening to retaliate. Strikes could have an impact on the chosen military facilities, but they may also have repercussions beyond the intended targets.
Diplomacy May Offer Trump a More Sustainable Alternative
Qatari peacekeepers are attempting to reboot U.S.-Iran talks, providing Washington with a fresh option before approving military action. Agreements can’t be guaranteed through diplomacy, especially with regards to Iran’s nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz. However, the negotiations might be able to defuse the situation without any further escalation.
