On December 4, Bob McGrath, who was most remembered for his role as one of the original human actors on Sesame Street, passed away. He had been ill for some time. He was 90.
On McGrath’s Facebook page, his family members broke the news of his passing to friends and followers.
It was announced today that our father, Bob McGrath, had died away. According to the statement, he passed away “peacefully at home while surrounded by his family.”
On the official Sesame Workshop Facebook page, a memorial was also posted to McGrath, in which they described him as a “valued part of the Sesame Street family for almost 50 years.”
“A founding cast member, Bob embodied the melodies of Sesame Street like no one else, and his performances brought joy and wonder to generations of children around the world,” they wrote.
“Whether teaching them the ABCs, the people in their neighborhood, or the simple joy of feeling music in their hearts,” Bob’s performances brought joy and wonder to children. “Bob embodied the melodies of Sesame Street like no one else.”
In the very first episode of the series, which aired in 1969, McGrath made his debut as the affable next-door neighbor Bob Johnson. His last appearance in the series came in a 2017 episode; he had been a member of all 47 seasons of the show, which spanned a period of approximately 50 years.
