Foodpanda Exits Thailand Market as Delivery Hero Refocuses Strategy

The German food delivery service Delivery Hero plans to stop operating Foodpanda in Thailand as of May 23, 2025 after thirteen years in business. Delivery Hero wants to shift resources to Asia-Pacific regions which generate stronger profits according to their new strategy. Although Delivery Hero will shutter its Thailand services it will keep its regional team active to offer support to its Asia Pacific businesses.

Delivery Hero assures everyone in Thailand that it will stay committed to helping employees, customers, business partners and delivery riders during this transition period. The food delivery sector in Thailand remains dominated by Lineman Wongnai and GrabFood while Foodpanda holds just 15% market share. Foodpanda reported continuous money losses from its start in Thailand until the present.

Delivery Hero holds the leading position in Asia but its growth performance dropped strongly when COVID-19 mitigation steps ended. Following unsuccessful talks in February the company could not finalize agreements to sell Foodpanda operations in particular Asian regions. Delivery Hero is changing its business strategy with this exit even though the company set out plans to sell Asian operations last September.

Key takeaways:

  • Foodpanda Thailand operations end May 23, 2025
  • Regional support team remains in Thailand
  • Company held only 15% market share against stronger competitors
  • Failed sale negotiations preceded closure decision
