Indian-origin man dies in Singapore after being pushed down stairs

An Indian-origin man has died after being pushed in the chest by another man and consequently falling backwards down a flight of stairs outside Concorde Shopping Mall on Orchard Road in Singapore last month.

34-year-old Thevandran Shanmugam sustained multiple fractures to his skull and was immediately rushed to a hospital, The Straits Times newspaper reported, adding the man was cremated at Mandai Crematorium Friday evening.

A day following the incident, the man who pushed Shanmugam, identified as 27-year-old Muhammed Azfary Abdul Kaha, was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt. However, court documents didn’t reveal if the two men knew each other before the incident.

If convicted, Azfary could receive a prison sentence of up to 10 years, in addition to being fined or caned. The man, court documents showed, had allegedly attacked Shanmugam while under a remission order after being jailed for other crimes.

A remission order allows an inmate to spend a certain portion of their sentence outside of prison. If convicted, Azfary could also face an additional sentence of up to 178 days.

Last month, the shocking incident with the Indian-origin man allegedly happened outside a popular nightspot at the shopping centre which houses a number of bars and nightclubs.

On Friday, Club Rumours extended its condolences to Shanmugam’s family and urged people not to speculate, refuting claims that the man had visited its premises in the morning on the day he was pushed down the stairs.
