Filipino taekwondo athlete Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape made history at the Asian Games 2026 by securing gold in the first-ever event of Mixed Individual Taekwondo. He added the Philippines‘ fourth gold medal of the competition after defeating his opponent Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang from Vietnam.

Jeus Yape wins Virtual Taekwondo Final

In the final, Yape had a great win against the team of Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang from Vietnam with a score of 2-0. He handled the first round well as he came in with 500–0 health points remaining for an opening round locked, and finished the second with a 620–0.

In both rounds, the Filipino athlete had an aggregate remaining health-point score of 1,120–0. His impressive efforts won him the first-ever medal in the mixed individual virtual Taekwondo competition.

Yape’s Road to the Asian Games Gold

Yape showcased his matchup prowess in the knockout stages. The semiconducting computer creator of Hayate Suzuki from Japan was beaten by the University of Santo Tomas standout in the quarterfinal and they defeated Rita Bakisheva of Kazakhstan in the semifinal.

He made his way through the rounds in the tournament culminating in a gold medal defeat of Vietnam. The win would also lead the Philippines’ campaign in various sports at the 20th Asian Games.

Second Medal for Yape at the Games

The diabolical wrestling gold was Yape’s second in the Asian Games. He competed in the Individual Poomsae event of the Sebi Tournament and himself won bronze in the competition.

His achievement of winning medals in two taekwondo disciplines shows his contribution as a member of the Philippine team. In the process he also brought more focus upon virtual taekwondo, a sport in which martial arts techniques are used for competition while the environment is virtual.
