Tragedy in Maluku: Indonesia’s Mount Dukono Erupts 2 Killed, 10 Trapped After 10km Ash Cloud

The distant islands of Halmahera have become a volcanic landscape. The volcano Mount Dukono, one of the most active and unpredictable in Indonesia, had a violent paroxysmal eruption on the afternoon of May 8, 2026. The eruption sent a huge cloud of ash into the air, some of which reached a height of 10 km, causing a humanitarian crisis in the area. The Scale of the Eruption in North Maluku

The eruption was fast, and so the local people didn’t have time to respond. The 10km ash cloud spread rapidly over the North Maluku province, and villages in the vicinity were plunged into darkness during the middle of the day. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) immediately raised the alert level of the Alcedo volcano from the lowest to the highest, cautioning of possible pyroclastic flows and lahar if heavy rainfall continues in the area.

The two deaths were in the local agricultural community, who were working on the mountainsides of the volcano at the time of the main blast. It was a sad period in the history of Mount Dukono because the thick super-heated ash prevented people from breathing. The National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) is also coordinating with army units in the local area to set up a safe perimeter. 

Emergency Response and Ten Trapped Hikers

Ten hikers, who were reportedly close to the rim of the crater when the explosion occurred, are the greatest concern for authorities. They are still blocking rescue efforts due to the ongoing “ash rain” and the potential for secondary eruptions. Obstacles in Mount Dukono Activity Rescue Missions

Low visibility for ground personnel is less than 5m. The trapped people were able to broadcast a short distress signal before the satellite communication was cut off by the ionized ash cloud, the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) said. The rescuers also have to use special breathing apparatus as sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) has been found at high concentrations. 

Impact on Regional Aviation

The 10km ash cloud has not only impacted life on the ground but also air travel in the region, paralyzing it. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) that will close a number of small airports in Maluku and also divert international flights away from the plume’s path. Volcanic ash particles are sharp and angular, consisting of rock and glass, and are a serious hazard to jet engines.

Understanding the Geological Context

Mount Dukono is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of the world with high seismic and Mount Dukono activity. Dukono has been in low-level, near-constant explosive eruption since the 1930s, unlike more well-known volcanoes, which erupt infrequently. But today’s event marks an important step up in its eruptive cycle.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the pressure from gas formed under the lava dome finally overtook the resistance, and a vertical column appeared today. People are advised to keep at least 5 km away from the crater since it is very unstable.
