New “Up” film: Pixar’s “Carl’s Date” premieres June 16

Disney has announced that Pixar Animation Studios will restart the wonderful moviegoing tradition of combining their feature picture with an animated short in conjunction with the June 16, 2023 release of “Elemental,” Pixar’s next film.

Carl’s Date reunites Oscar-winning film Up characters Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Ed Asner) and his adorable talking dog Dug (voiced by Bob Peterson). Carl’s Date is written and directed by Emmy Award winner Peterson and produced by Kim Collins.

Carl grudgingly agrees to go on a date with a female friend, but admits he has no idea how modern dating works. Dug, ever the helpful friend, steps in to ease Carl’s pre-date nerves and provide some tried-and-true suggestions for making friends—if you’re a dog.

This short was originally intended to be broadcast on Disney+ before this year’s Valentine’s Day, but it was pulled at the last minute, and now we know why: Disney is reverting to its pre-pandemic practices of releasing shorts alongside its theatrical blockbusters. “Carl’s Date” will be available on Disney+ when “Elemental” concludes its theatrical run. This will also demonstrate more support for Pixar’s vintage theatrical releases, which have suffered in recent years due to the direct release of films such as “Turning Red,” “Soul,” and “Luca” on Disney+.

In addition to the original classic feature “Up”, the other “Dug Days” shorts are now available to stream on Disney+.
