The Holiday Economy: How One Proclamation Just Boosted Philippine Tourism by 15%

Just a word of mouth through the media at Malacañang Palace has caused a rejuvenated impetus within the Philippine tourism industry. The effect of the government issuing presidential proclamations on more holidays and long weekends has ignited what economists refer to as holiday economics, a policy that aims at boosting travel numbers, consumerism levels and domestic tourism around the country.

This measure which is supported by the proclamations made by Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is already having quantifiable impacts. According to the tourism analysts, with the increase in the number of holidays that are extended, local economies can be revived and grow by up to 15% because the demand was favourable towards domestic travelling.

The Declaration that Gave It the Push

In 2025, the Philippine government declared Proclamation No. 1006 ( Philippines, 2025) which enrols the official regular and special non-working holidays in 2026. The proclamation also incorporates some days as holidays that are well scheduled to result in long weekends- a tactic that has been adopted to motivate Filipinos to travel in the country.

The examples of declared or expected holidays are:

  • Chinese New Year February 17 (special non-working day)
  • Black Saturday-April 4 (special non working day)
  • All Souls Day- November 2 (special non-working day)
  • Christmas Eve December 24 (special non-working day)

Through the concentration of holidays in close proximity to weekends or introducing special non-working days, the government is successful in creating longer holidays for workers and families and in such cases, this is translated to more travel and more spending on tourism.

Holiday Economics

The economics of holidays has not been new in the Philippines. It was implemented many years ago as one of the ways to spur domestic tourism.

The policy permits the accommodation or the supplementation of the middle-of-the-week holidays with non-working days close to each other. Its aim is a straightforward one to make long weekends tempting to travel and spend on leisure.

According to economic reports provided to congress legislators, increasing the length of holiday weekends by a few days will improve domestic tourism by approximately 1015 percent coming to the rescue of sectors in hospitality, restaurants, travel and shop.

The impact is already being felt by the Tourism Businesses. Long weekends are among the most lucrative seasons of the year to the tourism operators. In case of more holidays declared:

  • There are increased domestic bookings by the airlines.
  • Increased occupancy rates are received in hotels.
  • The tourist attractions in the area are visited more often.
  • There is a boost in sales by restaurants and retailing businesses.

Usually, people increase their visits to the popular resort destinations like Boracay Island, Palawan, and Cebu especially during long weekends.

The spikes of travel created by holiday reasons may be a lifeline in smaller communities that heavily depend on travel as an economic factor.

Why Policy is Important to the Economy?

Tourism is still ranked among the key areas of the Philippine economy. National plans on development have reported that the industry helps millions of people by giving them jobs in the hospitality, transportation, retail and entertainment sectors.

Holiday economics assists by motivating more people to travel within their host country:

  • Favor minor tourism companies.
  • Create job opportunities in the hospitality industry.
  • Expand consumer expenditure at the local communities.
  • Market telling of the other destinations in the country.

Ideally, every long weekend is a small-scale economic boost to the tourism industry.

One of the Strategic decisions by Malacañang

The decision of Malacañang to place holidays on the basis of the long weekends indicates a larger plan which is the transformation of public holidays into economic prospects.

With the travel demand still recovering and domestic tourism performing well, policies such as holiday economics may be influential in fulfilling the growth of the sector.

It also represents more chances to visit and socialize with family to millions of Filipinos. In the case of the tourism industry, it translates to something even greater, that is, a continuous supply of customers halfway with the magic of a due holiday.
