Thousands of runners had to rearrange their weekend plans after the PJ Half Marathon 2026 was cancelled due to worsening haze which poses a health risk for prolonged outdoor activities. Petaling Jaya Half Marathon, which was to be held on 6th September this year in Selangor, Malaysia was cancelled due to the air pollution index being unhealthy. Organisers then shared information on an alternative 5KM route and race entitlements, with a limited collection window for those still in need of their packs. The following is what participants should be aware of regarding refunds, collection and the cancellation.
Why Was PJ Half Marathon 2026 Cancelled?
The event was canceled due to continued unhealthy air quality by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and organiser Puncak Ventures SRA.
The organisers took into account the predictions that the Air Pollutant Index (API) would be better in the next 24 hours, Media Selangor reported. Readings were still unhealthy, however, which could pose risks for runners, volunteers and event staff.
This ruling applied to the 36th running of the event which provided distances from 1KM fun run through to 5KM, 10KM, 21KM and 30KM. Some 10,000 people were anticipated to take part.
This cancellation was not unique. Additionally, The Straits Times reported that haze affected other sporting events in Malaysia over the weekend.
PJ Half Marathon Refund Policy After Cancellation
For registered runners, one of the biggest questions is whether the PJ Half Marathon refund policy provides reimbursement.
Will Runners Receive a Refund?
The published RaceXasia registration terms state that the organiser reserves the right to cancel, postpone or alter the date or location of the event. They also note that no automatic refunds are given when the cancellation is due to unavoidable conditions or unsafe weather-related conditions.
There is no general announcement of any refund as of September 7, 2026 that overrides those terms.
It is therefore advisable for participants to not presume that registration fees are to be repaid. The compensation, credit and/or any other arrangement that follows this should be checked by official organiser communication.
PJ Half Marathon Race Pack Collection Extended
The good news for those who haven’t gotten their PJ Half Marathon race pack is they’ll get a new one in the mail soon.
The original collection was held at Jaya Shopping Centre from September 3–5. After the cancellation, arrangements were made for runners concerned.
The Star reports that any uncollected race packs can be collected from the Puncak Ventures Office in Subang Jaya, from 10am to 4.30pm, until September 8. Participants are warned to contact the organiser in advance to bring their race bib.
Those who cannot pick up can have postage sent to them, but must pay for delivery costs.

What Happened to the Alternative 5KM Route?
Organisers had planned to cancel the main PJ Half Marathon 2026 but gave the option to those who had registered but did not wish to join the cancelled main event to run the optional 5KM event.
The shortened option was offered because the main event was cancelled because of unhealthy API readings, MBPJ said. The announcement sparked mixed reactions, especially based on the reason for the cancellation of the entire event, which was due to concerns about exercising outdoors in the haze.
There were also road closures in Petaling Jaya in the initial race day traffic plan. Drivers were warned prior to the cancellation of the tolls that they should take alternative routes instead; Jalan Barat to Section 14 or Seapark to Jalan 222 to Petaling Jaya city centre.
