Should there be a New Category in Art Competitions for AI Art

Inside the art world, artificial intelligence is the new breed of artist that is creating quite a buzz. Application of artificial intelligence (AI) to the art industry has generated controversy and discussions about the basic concepts of art. Should artwork created by artificial intelligence be entered in another category in art competitions?

Within artificial intelligence (AI), “intelligence” is the capacity of machines—especially computer systems—to behave intelligently. Development and analysis of techniques and software that allow machines to perceive their environment, obtain knowledge from it, and use cognitive abilities to make decisions that increase their likelihood of achieving specific goals is the main focus of the computer science subfield of artificial intelligence, or AI.

Does that amount to cheating?

Advertising art competitions using artificial intelligence have drawn criticism. It’s said that a handful of the winners stole their ideas from computer programme outputs. One wonders if this qualifies as legal cheating.

Unless the event planners believe AI artwork is dishonest, there are no strict rules regarding this topic. That just seems incomprehensible.

While artificial intelligence has been used to create art for some time, with the advancement of modern AI software, even novices can now create complex, abstract, or photorealistic works with just a few lines entered into a text box.

AI in painting is compared by some artists to Photoshop and other computer programmes used to modify digital images. Furthermore, stress is the significance of applying creativity to produce work deserving of awards. In addition to this, it would recognise the unique contributions that artificial intelligence has made to the area of art, while at the same time safeguarding the genuineness of human creativity. All the experts think that AI is here to stay and will progress quickly in the next few years.

A special category inside competitions for artwork created by artificial intelligence is one way some suggest to solve these issues. This would recognise the specialness of AI as a creative media and enable an accurate comparison of similar works.
