Toyota has announced a large recall of more than 550,000 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs, highlighting a serious issue in family vehicles. This recall involves 2021-2024 models where second-row seat recliner assemblies may not lock properly after being adjusted. Picture getting ready for a road trip, only to have the seats move unexpectedly during a high-speed crash, which raises the risk of injuries for children and passengers.
The problem comes from weak return springs in the recliner mechanisms. After tilting seats for comfort, they might not snap back securely. In a collision, unsecured seatbacks cannot properly hold occupants in place. This turns a safe SUV into a danger. Toyota confirmed that 420,771 gas Highlanders and 129,236 Hybrids are affected nationwide.
Dealers will replace the faulty springs with improved versions at no cost. Owner letters will be sent in early May 2026, but act fast. Check your VIN on NHTSA.gov or Toyota.com/recall. Call Toyota at 800-331-4331 or NHTSA at 888-327-4236 for help.
Enter your 17-digit VIN online to confirm your involvement. Schedule a free service soon, especially if your Highlander transports loved ones every day. This recall highlights the importance of regular safety checks for popular SUVs like the Highlander, especially with family travel on the rise.
