Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor will renew their intense rivalry on July 11 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. This much awaited trilogy fight will top the first all-women’s professional boxing event at the major venue. The event will be streaming on Netflix.
Taylor who played for Ireland defeated their first fight in 2022 by split decision before a sold out audience of more than 19,000. Their second encounter was in Texas in 2023 where Taylor once more defeated Serrano by unanimous decision in a closely contested and disputed fight. Now they fight for a third and last time, with Taylor’s undisputed super lightweight championships at stake.
There is rising tensions between them. At a recent press conference, Serrano asserted she was cheated in the last two fights and promised to prove to the judges who the real champion is. Taylor, who is 38 years old, hit back hard calling Serrano’s assertions insane and insisted again that she had decisively won both earlier fights.
Though the headliner promises fireworks, the remainder of the card is historic as well. The show includes other elite women’s fights such as Alycia Baumgardner retaining both of her super featherweight titles. Six of the top 15 women in the world will compete.
Taylor and Serrano have inspired a whole generation of female fighters, making what once appeared impossible an international phenomenon. As they face closing out their rivalry, the two women are not only gunning for victory but to leave their mark in boxing history.
Their last fight will be something more than merely a fight; it’s a testament to how far women’s boxing has advanced.
