Thailand National Communicable Disease Committee officially placed Hantavirus as Thailand’s 14th serious communicable disease that gives legal authority to the government to enforce strict reporting, quarantine and disease-control measures.
The transfer comes as growing concern in the international community about an outbreak of the Andes virus being reported from a cruise ship traveling in the Atlantic Ocean. While Thai health officials make it clear that there is no outbreak in the country today, they are taking steps in advance to avoid Thai people getting infected from overseas cases.
Since the new classification, all hospitals, airports and border authorities in Thailand have had to be subject to increased monitoring and emergency response procedures during 2026.
Hantavirus disease is a very rarely seen, potentially deadly viral illness that is usually spread by contact with infected rodent urine, droppings or saliva. The most common infections occur when airborne contaminated particles are inhaled when cleaning rodent infested rooms.
The Andes strain is being closely followed due to its near to full scope of person-to-person transmission reports during close contact settings. This has drawn attention from governments around the globe about imported cases due to international travellers and contact with cruise ships.
The decision to beef up monitoring follows concerns that Thailand may be awash with highly-mobile tourism networks that could sour transmission if cases aren’t quickly picked up.
The first indication is a fever of over 38°C together with the onset of flu-like or gastrointestinal symptoms. They can involve chills, intense aches in the muscles, headaches, dizziness, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Such early symptoms can be mistaken for the symptoms of a common viral illness, and so it is crucial to record a travel history and to assess for exposure when medical forms of assessment are conducted.
Patients with Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome symptoms are being monitored closely for difficulty breathing in an abrupt fashion, for a persistent coughing, for pulmonary congestion and edema, and worsening symptoms of respiratory disease on a rapid basis.
Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome is another fear; and involves abnormal bleeding, abnormally low blood pressure, shock like symptoms or symptoms of acute kidney failure.
Patients with early symptoms and severe complications under the revised disease-control law are instantaneously considered as suspected Hantavirus cases.
Thai health officials are urging everyone who has been recently been exposed to people with symptoms to immediately seek medical help and provide all travel history details.
This particularly relates to travellers who have returned from designated high-risk areas and persons associated with maritime travel routes from where recent outbreaks have occurred. Rite Aid stores are also alerting customers who have recently cleaned rodent areas/infested homes, storage areas or abandoned buildings to watch for symptoms.
New reporting requirements for medical facilities. A suspected case should be notified to public health authorities within three hours of its identification in any hospital/clinic and a formal investigation should be initiated within 12 hours of its identification.

Perhaps the most talked about issue of Thailand’s new policy is the 42-day quarantine that affected high-risk contacts.
The rule, however, does not apply to so-called tourist visitors to Thailand, officials say. Instead it focuses on persons who have direct, extended or unprotected contact with a probable or confirmed case of Hantavirus.
This can be anyone sharing a cabin on a cruise, or members of the immediate family or passengers in an infected person’s proximity for long journeys. The time is a reference to the longest incubation time so far recorded for some of the virus’ strains and is set at 42 days.
Hantavirus is a rare virus disease primarily transmitted by contact with the urine, saliva or droppings of infected rodents.
No. This quarantine will be imposed on people who are deemed to have been in close contact with any confirmed or suspected Hantavirus patients.
Symptoms can occur early and include fever, chills, muscle pain, headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.
