BANGKOK – The country’s farm exports to ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries rises to 5.1% from the same period last year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Thailand’s overall trade of agricultural products with the region reached $3.6 billion in the 1st quarter.

Ministry’s Office of Agricultural Economics Deputy Secretary General Tatsanee Muangkaew said that Thailand has enjoyed a trade surplus of $1.18 billion. Cambodia becomes the country’s largest trading partner in the Asean region with a total of $449.4 million worth of agricultural products.

Although Thailand agricultural product exports has been sluggish due to drought and now the coronavirus pandemic, The country still ranks among the world’s leaders in the exportation of rice, seafood, rubber and sugar. With the overseas demand for rice, seafood, fruit and other edibles being accelerated, even as the Covid-19 pandemic disrupts production and shipments, the country seems to be returning to its economic roots as a food producer and regional exporter.
