The U.S. Presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and China, Xi Jinping, are slated for a summit on artificial intelligence, critical minerals and trade in Washington on September 24, 2026. The trip to the White House is part of Xi’s appearance on Sept. 23, and will be his first visit to the White House since 2008, when both powers wanted to compete without feeling too matched.

Trade Truce Under Pressure

Trade is anticipated to be a major element in the talks. Led by the leaders in October, 2025, the truce on tariffs set to expire on November 10. Washington wants to open up the market, and steps to balance or rectify the situation; Beijing has a stake in continuing regular trade and preventing further escalation.

The two sides agreed to establish U.S.-China Boards of Trade and Investment and China would work to solve America’s concerns over shortages of rare earth and critical minerals in May, the White House announced. That will be helpful in making the talks easier.

Rare Earths Become a Strategic Lever

Rare earth metals used in electric vehicles, electronics and defence systems. Exports to China have been tightened and supply security is a primary concern in Washington and among manufacturers.

The USA is seeking alternate sources and utilization capabilities. The administration also made in August over $2 billion worth of mining projects to reduce foreign reliance on critical materials.

AI Moves From Competition to Risk Management

There is another delicate layer added by A.I. The two countries are racing to develop emerging models and to build the computing infrastructure and to extend their control of semiconductors, and there are talks of shared risks.

Prior to the summit, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will speak on AI safety, guardrails and open-weight models with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The talks offer competitors considering strategies to contain incidents involving AI.

What the Summit Could Clarify?

The meeting might offer more clarity on tariffs, rare earth elements licenses, AI dialogue, and on an overall economic coordination. There are significant differences, however, over critical issues of technology, market access and strategic security.

The south’s fate is at stake in Washington and Beijing, but also here. Tariffs and critical mineral trade and tech restrictions impact electronics, vehicles, semiconductors and manufacturing value chains throughout the region.
