ASEAN adopted a visionary shared future of ASEAN Community Vision 2045: Our Shared Future, a new 20-year journey for ASEAN. The roadmap aims to aspire in the achievement of a “resilient, innovative, dynamic, and people-centred” ASEAN that is able to adapt to the change and challenge of the economy, technology, geopolitics and more.
Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn has been stressing implementation. At the ASEAN Summit 2026, he noted geopolitics, innovation and opportunity, noting the principles of ASEAN unity, ASEAN Centrality, artificial intelligence, digitalisation and ASEAN’s green transition.
From Vision to Action
There are four Strategic Plans under ASEAN 2045, namely: Politico-Security Community, Economic Community, Socio-Cultural Community and Connectivity. The structure aims to help to operationalize ASEAN 2045 into priorities and actions.
The economic agenda aims for an economy equipped for the future, based on high technology and growth through sustainability and resilience. It also seeks to close the development gap and expand the economy’s opportunities.
AI and Digitalisation Take Center Stage
Roadmap utilizes technology as central. ASEAN’s competitiveness is key to its artificial intelligence, digital services and innovation.
Dr. Kao has highlighted the need to ensure that technological innovation is inclusive and “people centred”. Digital skills will grow in importance as economies become increasingly digital, and will benefit companies in so many ways.
Resilience Becomes an Economic Priority
ASEAN 2045 addresses the effects of shocks and stresses on the supply chain, climate change, and trans-border issues. Its goal is to create a flexible, robust community that will be able to address future challenges.
This is a dream that needs greater connectivity and joint efforts. Disruptions can be managed for ASEAN as they can rely on resilient infrastructure, logistics and economic networks for regional integration.
Preserving ASEAN Centrality
The roadmap reinforces the role of ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific and promises to take action on the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific by bringing various projects to life.
The centrality is thus greater than diplomatic verbiage. It offers a structure for regional agency and engagement with large powers – and collective response to change.
Challenge Is Implementation
The most important test will be translating the commitments into results. Long-term collaboration of member states is necessary for infrastructure, skills, digital systems and initiatives.
Dr. Kao has asked companies, industry, academia and professionals to share their knowledge, expertise and network. They can make things happen for or against ASEAN 2045 being a framework of opportunity throughout the Southeast Asian region.
