Travel in Southeast Asia has changed again, and when you’re in the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh, a new administrative hurdle has come between you and the first bowl of true Pho. Since the 15th of April 2026, the Vietnam Immigration Department has officially switched from manual processing to a mandatory pre-arrival registration system. The whole digital revolution is part of the broader project of the “Smart Border” initiative to alleviate notorious congestion at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). Getting a visa is no longer the last step of the process if you’re thinking about going to the country, it is now essential to have a unique digital clearance to enter the country.
The biggest change in the latest Vietnam immigration update 2026 is that the Digital Arrival Card (DAC) has been introduced. All foreign nationals are required to fill out an online declaration, which is a mandatory document prior to their arrival at SGN. The policy is an online version of the previous paper arrival/departure cards and gathers vital health and travel-related information to assist in the process of conducting the face-to-face interview with immigration officials.
The Vietnam Immigration Department says this is the case for all e-visas, visa exemptions, and 5-year visa waivers. Currently, only Vietnamese citizens and passengers transiting through the airport without entering the domestic section of the airport are exempt. The move becomes significant as it will save up to 30 seconds on processing time per passenger, something that is crucial for SGN, which receives more than 40,000 international arrivals per day.
In order to get a smooth entry, the travellers are required to pass through the official portal within a specific time duration. Otherwise, you may well find your boarded flight refused at the airport you are leaving, or there will be delays on landing.
Entries will only be accepted in the 72 hours prior to your scheduled arrival in Vietnam. Data cannot be submitted weeks before the actual date. This will make sure that your health documentation and flight information are up to date. This immigration to Vietnam protocol is a must:
On arrival at Tan Son Nhat, there are lanes marked for those who have finished their registration prior to arrival. Your passport, visa/exemption, and the digital QR code will be requested. If you don’t remember, QR posters are located in the arrival hall – but to use them, you need a strong internet connection, and time will have to be sacrificed on your trip.

As of the Vietnam immigration update 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Board recommends people verify their passport information on the application. If there is a typing error in the passport number anywhere in the QR code, it will be invalidated, and resubmission will be required at the counter.
In addition, since it is a trial operation for SGN airport, passengers going to Hanoi (HAN) and Da Nang (DAD) need to be careful. The Official Gazette for Vietnam has commented on a nationwide implementation being considered by the end of 2026, but it is not yet mandatory in Vietnam.
No. This is an additional requirement and must be done prior to arrival. Still, visitors must have an active e-visa or visa-exemption document to enter Vietnam. The Digital Arrival Card is solely for immigration and health monitoring purposes.
No, the official government portal is completely free. Be wary of third-party websites that attempt to charge “service fees” for this declaration. Always use the .gov.vn extension.
The QR code is connected to his or her arrival date. For flights delayed in the same 72-hour window, the code is still valid. If the date of arrival changes for any reason, and is not a day within that period, you should submit the form again using the new information.
