Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s annual salary package is on the verge of being raised from S$2.2 million to S$3.6 million, bringing the Singapore PM salary back into the spotlight of the national conversation on political pay, public service and affordability.
The changes to the package are effective from 15 October 2026 and comes after an independent study of Singapore’s political salary structure. Wong also has said that he will give the entire inflationary rise of his salary to various causes for the next five years if he remains prime minister.
Why Is the Singapore PM Salary Rising to S$3.6 Million?
This is in line with the 2026 Review of Salaries for Political Appointment Holders and Members of Parliament that was done by an independent committee set up in December 2025.
Singapore’s political pay structure essentially had been stagnating for 15 years. A review in 2017 found the framework to be sound but the government did not make salary changes then. A further review was postponed in 2023 due to the economy.
The new framework increases the entry-level salary for MR4 ministers to S$1.8 million per annum, from the current S$1.1 million. The salary of the prime minister is capped at double the MR4 reference salary, which comes to the new salary package of S$3.6 million per annum.
According to Singapore’s Public Service Division, the PM’s package includes the 13th-month bonus, Annual Variable Component and National Bonus, assuming the relevant targets are achieved.
Why the Singapore Political Salary Increase Is Controversial
The numbers, of course, have been the subject of comment. Singapore has long taken an unusual route of tying up the compensation of ministers to earnings of the highly-paid professionals in the private sector.
The benchmark is the median income of the top 1,000 Singapore Citizens, and the ethos and sacrifice of public service is reflected through a 40% discount. According to the government, competitive pay makes it more likely that it will be able to recruit quality personnel whose alternatives, in the private sector, would be to earn much higher wages.
Government Says the Framework Must Stay Competitive
While he was testifying before Parliament, Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing said the tuning of the benchmark would cost around 3.6% a year over 15 years.
The government estimates that over that time, the median Singaporean worker’s wages have increased by 4.3% a year, while lower-paid workers have seen their wages rise by 4.6% a year.
But the topline numbers are still sensitive ones. Wong admitted that the amounts paid for political salaries are more high-end than most Singaporeans earn and are being closely watched. The issue of political pay has also been reported in the international media by the Associated Press (AP).
Will Every Singapore Minister Immediately Receive the Full Increase?
No. This is an important distinction in the Singapore minister salary increase.
Current political office holders will see an up to 9% one off increase in their salary from 15/10 depending on their individual situation and performance. The subsequent salary changes will be based on performance and duties and not necessarily move every incumbent to the new salary.
Since there is no higher political figure to decide on the increment of an individual prime minister, he or she is treated differently. This is because his pay remains pegged in the framework.

Lawrence Wong Will Donate His Salary Increase
In the next five years, says Wong, the entire extra amount that will come from the salary change, under the assumption that he will still be PM, will go toward some appropriate charity if he has one.
