The little-known rare earths of Myanmar may have the potential to make the historic Stilwell Road strategic again, but it will take much more than reopening an old wartime road to make that happen. For my part, I believe that the strategic importance of Northeast India connectivity and supply-chain diversification coupled with critical minerals can make the corridor strategically significant for India and her partners. However, Myanmar’s conflict and infrastructure problems are still significant hurdles.
Why Myanmar’s Rare Earths Matter
A critical-mineral opportunity
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Myanmar became the fourth-largest producer of rare-earth products in 2024 at approximately 7.1% of the world’s production. The majority of the extraction is carried out in Kachin State, while China is still the number one market for the country’s rare-earth exports.
This raises the obvious question of strategy: is it possible to find other ways to access these resources in India?
Recent studies indicate that Myanmar may offer a supply-chain insurance policy for India, especially for the two critical heavy rare earth elements, dysprosium and terbium.

Stilwell Road Could Gain a New Role
Stilwell Road is a highway that connects Ledo, Assam and Kunming, China via Myanmar and was constructed during World War II. The historic trail traverses the Pangsau Pass and the northern part of Myanmar.
Its future should not simply be envisioned as a mining highway in my opinion. The modernised corridor may have the capacity to accommodate:
- Critical-mineral logistics
- Cross-border trade
- Northeast India’s economic integration
- Regional supply-chain diversification
- Greater connectivity with Southeast Asia
But security is the key factor. Direct conflict in Kachin State impacts regions linked to the rare earths industry in Myanmar and travel through its borders.
FAQs
Why are Myanmar’s rare earths strategically important?
They could help diversify supplies of critical minerals used in advanced technologies.
Could the Stilwell Road transport rare earths?
Potentially, but infrastructure, border controls and Myanmar’s security situation would need substantial improvement.
Is the Stilwell Road currently a major international trade route?
No. Parts have deteriorated, although sections remain relevant to local and border trade.
