For his pioneering work with IceCube and their discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin, Francis Halzen has received the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics. The prize was announced on October 6 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which has been honoring the decades of work which had opened a new approach to the study of the universe.

Why Did Francis Halzen Win the Nobel Prize?

IceCube changed neutrino astronomy

Belgian-American physicist Halzen of the University of Wisconsin–Madison is the originator of the concept of the giant neutrino detector made of Antarctic ice. The IceCube is a huge array of thousands of light sensors buried in the ice of the South Pole, about one cubic kilometre’s worth.

The difficulty of detecting neutrinos is that they rarely interact with matter. When these particles interact with the ice, they create a small amount of light, which is detected by the IceCube system and can be used to determine the direction and energy of the particles.

What Did IceCube Discover?

A new way to study powerful cosmic events and distant galaxies has been found thanks to the high-energy neutrinos that have been detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located beyond our solar system. In 2013, IceCube announced its first detection of astrophysical neutrinos.

To date, the international partnership includes approximately 450 scientists from 14 countries and an IceCube Upgrade has recently been completed to improve future measurements.

FAQs

Who won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics?
