President Donald Trump again argues that he is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize and has indicated he doubts the Norwegian Nobel Committee will include him in the 2026 winner list when it names its next laureate on October 9. He was speaking at this year’s big sought-after award that was the subject of much attention.
During an Oval Office news briefing, Trump referred to his mediation and/or assistance in ending eight foreign conflicts since assuming the White House. He claimed that making such efforts in Diplomacy makes him a good candidate for a prestigious Award of Peace.
Trump also wondered if the Norwegian Nobel Committee that has denied him a nomination would consider his candidacy. The committee has a reputation for “not giving to people like me,” he said, not the first criticism he’d leveled at the organization, or its processes, in choosing peace prize recipients.
On several occasions, the president has referenced his desire to win the Nobel, akin to President Barack Obama’s win in 2009. Trump has wondered why Obama got the accolade early into his term, while stating he has done more to resolve international conflicts through his own despite criticizing him for doing too little there.
In addition, Trump mentioned Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado. After acknowledging Trump’s support for Venezuela’s opposition in this regard, Machado later gave him the Nobel medal in a symbolic gesture.
Trump has gotten several Foreign leaders and political figures to support his running for the Nobel. The leaders have stated that he was nominated by leaders from Israel, Cambodia and Pakistan for his diplomacy. But the Norwegian Nobel Institute did not rain down the names, nor submit any official confirmation of nominees until the day of the award, after 50 years of first keeping the names to themselves.
But claims about Trump’s diplomacy have been questioned. Some of the wars that he has mentioned persist in being unstable and exist on the Cambodia-Thailand border and in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Reuters. He hasn’t delivered on his promise to end the war in Ukraine soon, either.
The announcement will take place October 9 in Oslo for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it was concentrating on candidates and initiatives that foster the vision of international cooperation, peace and the concepts in Alfred Nobel’s will.
While the committee keeps its distance the rest of the way to announcing, Trump’s newest statements guarantee that his Nobel bid campaign will be important before the announcement.
