Malaysia is seeking to bring Myanmar back into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in a move that brings back the discussion on how the regional bloc should involve itself with Myanmar’s military backed government.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that his government would do everything it can to reintegrate Myanmar into the regional community on October 8, 2026. The shift is in the midst of ongoing conflict, human rights issues and questions over the legitimacy of governments, however.
Malaysia Calls for Myanmar ASEAN Return
During his visit to Malaysia, Anwar met Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing, during which he made the remarks. The talks focused on enhanced bilateral cooperation, and the repatriation of Myanmar nationals detained in Malaysia. While diplomatic efforts are being made by Malaysia, engagement should be ongoing, but does not necessarily lead to formal recognition of Myanmar’s military-backed government, Anwar said.
Why Myanmar Was Excluded From ASEAN Meetings
In February 2021, Myanmar’s military seized power, sparking a broad uprising and protracted armed conflict. As a result of the lack of progress with the Five-Point Consensus peace plan involving Myanmar, ASEAN has limited political representation at summits and ASEAN foreign ministers’ meetings. The framework will lead to an end to violence, dialogue and humanitarian assistance.
Political and Human Rights Concerns
Malaysia is seeking a new engagement and that has been met with criticism by rights groups that said diplomatic engagement will only add to the military-backed leadership rather than provide a solution to the crisis.
There has also been increasing anxiety about the repatriation of Myanmarians, including of vulnerable refugees, to a country where there are ongoing conflicts and alleged abuses. Malaysian officials have indicated that returns must be safe, voluntary and dignified.
What Myanmar’s Return Could Mean for ASEAN
Myanmar’s potential reintegration poses challenges to ASEAN unity, regional stability, and political participation prerequisites. Member states have disagreed on their approach to the authorities, and the bloc’s peace plan continues to be at the heart of its policies. The status of Myanmar will change based on consensus and progress in the region in solving the conflict.
